Which AirPods Should You Buy in 2026? Every Model Compared

If you last looked at AirPods a year ago, everything you knew is out of date. Between September 2024 and April 2026 Apple replaced or discontinued every single model in the range. AirPods Pro 2 is gone. AirPods 3 is gone. The H1 AirPods Max is gone, replaced in April 2026 by AirPods Max 2.

Most buying guides still list models you can no longer buy from Apple. Here's the actual 2026 lineup, what separates them, and the one feature that genuinely changes who should buy what.

Every one runs the H2 chip — including AirPods Max 2, which has one per ear cup. Apple held prices flat on both generational upgrades: Pro 3 launched at the same $249 as Pro 2, and Max 2 at the same $549 as the 2020 original.

AirPods Pro 2 was discontinued on 9 September 2025 but still turns up at third-party retailers around $199. That's worth knowing, because it keeps the one feature AirPods 4 can't offer — more on that shortly.

The feature that should decide your choice

Forget sound quality for a moment. The most consequential difference in the range is that AirPods Pro work as FDA-authorised hearing aids, and nothing else Apple sells does.

It works like this: you take a roughly five-minute clinically validated hearing test on an iPhone or iPad, which produces a personalised audiogram. The AirPods then apply real-time, frequency-specific amplification tuned to your hearing. It's intended for adults 18+ with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss.

The critical detail: this is AirPods Pro 2 and Pro 3 only. Not AirPods 4 in either version, and — surprisingly — not AirPods Max 2. The reason for AirPods 4 is physical: the open design doesn't seal the ear canal, so the test wouldn't be accurate and the amplification wouldn't be effective.

Availability differs by feature and country. The Hearing Test covers around 170 countries. The Hearing Aid covers about 155 — but notably excludes Canada, France, Spain, India and Mexico. Hearing Protection is where Pro 3 pulls decisively ahead: on Pro 2 it's available in just 16 territories, while on Pro 3 it's around 180, because Apple secured EU and UK certification at launch.

If anyone in your household has been putting off a hearing check, this single fact is worth more than every spec below it.

AirPods Pro 3: what actually changed

Beyond hearing health, Pro 3 brought real upgrades over Pro 2:

• Heart-rate sensing — a custom sensor pulsing infrared light 256 times per second, tracking 50+ workout types in the Fitness app. It's the only AirPods model with it.
• Twice the noise cancellation of Pro 2, and four times the original AirPods Pro.
• IP57, up from IP54 — buds and case.
• Five ear-tip sizes including a new XXS, foam-infused, designed from 10,000+ ear scans.
• Live Translation, in beta, requiring an Apple Intelligence iPhone. Not available to EU residents at launch.

And a genuinely counter-intuitive one that almost no roundup mentions: battery went up per charge but down overall. Pro 3 gives 8 hours with ANC against Pro 2's 6 — a 33% gain, independently measured by SoundGuys at 8h 42m versus 5h 43m. But total endurance with the case fell from 30 hours to 24. Apple shrank the case's reserve.

If you charge nightly, Pro 3 is clearly better. If you routinely go days without touching a charger, Pro 2 lasted longer as a system.

Two honest gripes: there's still no user EQ anywhere in the range, and at $249 Apple doesn't include a USB-C cable in the box.

AirPods 4: which version?

The $50 gap buys four things — active noise cancellation, Adaptive Audio and Transparency, Conversation Awareness, and a wireless-charging case with a Find My speaker. It also unlocks Live Translation.

Set expectations on the ANC, though. Apple's own figure is that AirPods Pro 3 cancel four times more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC. A sealed tip does most of the work in noise cancellation, and AirPods 4 don't have one. Reviewers describe it as effective on constant low-frequency noise like aircraft and fans, and much weaker elsewhere.

The open design has a real upside too — if you dislike the plugged-ear sensation of sealed tips, AirPods 4 are the comfortable choice, and they're the only current model that doesn't need tip-fitting.

AirPods Max 2: only if you don't own the old ones

AirPods Max 2 arrived in April 2026 with the H2 chip, Bluetooth upgraded from 5.0 to 5.3, ANC up to 1.5× more effective, and a set of features the original never got — Adaptive Audio, Conversation Awareness, Voice Isolation, Live Translation and studio-quality recording. It keeps 24-bit/48kHz lossless over USB-C.

What didn't change is the honest part: identical exterior, same 386g weight, still no power button, still no IP rating, still SBC/AAC only, still no EQ, and still 20 hours of battery.

SoundGuys scored it 7.8/10 and measured 21 hours — then noted that 20 hours is "downright disappointing in 2026 when flagship headphones from Sony and Sennheiser blow past the 35-hour mark." On the claimed 1.5× ANC improvement they measured 89.4% attenuation versus 88% for the original, and were unconvinced.

Their verdict, and AppleInsider's, converge: buy it if you're deep in Apple's ecosystem and don't already own a pair. If you own the USB-C AirPods Max, don't bother. If you want the best over-ear headphones outright, the Sony WH-1000XM6 is $100 cheaper with LDAC and in-app EQ.

Which one should you buy?

• Best overall — AirPods Pro 3 ($249). Engadget scored it 90/100, SoundGuys gave it Editor's Choice at 7.8/10 and called it "close to perfect," Tom's Guide called it the best AirPods yet.
• Best value — AirPods 4 with ANC ($179). The core Pro experience at a materially lower price, if you can live with weaker cancellation.
• Budget — AirPods 4 ($129). Engadget's budget pick at 88/100.
• Best noise cancelling — AirPods Pro 3. SoundGuys rated the ANC 9.0/10, measuring around 90% average reduction in outside loudness.
• Best for calls — AirPods Pro 3, with Voice Isolation switched on manually. On Max 2 it isn't the default, and reviewers advise enabling it in Control Centre.
• For Android — none of them. On Android you get basic Bluetooth playback and nothing else: no Spatial Audio, no hearing features, no customisation, and you can't even update the firmware without an Apple device. Reviewers point to the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 instead, which has proper Android support.

One timing warning before you buy

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has reported that an "AirPods Ultra" could launch as soon as September 2026 — roughly a month from now — alongside the iPhone 18 Pro. The reporting describes tiny infrared cameras in both buds acting as "eyes for Siri" for hands-free Visual Intelligence, priced above $249.

Treat this as rumour, and note the reporting genuinely conflicts: AppleInsider reports Apple still plans a camera-free AirPods Pro update for 2026, and Gurman himself has at points suggested 2027 is likelier. Code referencing the product has appeared in the iOS 27 beta, which is the strongest signal so far.

The practical read: if you're about to spend $249 on Pro 3 and you can wait four weeks, wait. If you need them now, Pro 3 is an excellent product that isn't going to stop being one.
