iPhone 18 Pro vs 18 Pro Max: Which Size Should You Actually Buy?

Apple ships the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max with identical silicon, identical cameras and identical colours. That makes this an unusually clean decision: you are choosing a screen size, a battery, and a weight you have to carry around all day. The $100 gap is real but it is not what most people get wrong — the size is.

Both models launched on 18 September 2026. Apple's pricing starts at $1,199 for the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for the 6.9-inch iPhone 18 Pro Max, both with 256GB of storage, and both a $100 rise over last year's starting price. Storage runs to 2TB for the first time on an iPhone.

What is identical between them

Everything that usually separates phones: the A20 Pro chip on a 2nm process with its 6-core CPU and 7-core GPU; the new variable-aperture 48MP main camera that physically stops down from f/1.48 to f/4.0 through a six-blade iris; the 48MP ultra-wide; the 48MP tetraprism telephoto with 4x and 8x optical settings; the Pro Controls interface with manual aperture, shutter and white balance plus a live histogram; 60W wired charging; 25W MagSafe; the expanded vapour-chamber cooling; and the four colours — Black, Burgundy, Glacier and Silver.

If you have read a review praising the 18 Pro's cameras or chip, every word of it applies to both phones. There is no "the Max gets the better camera" split this year.

The 18 Pro is rated for up to 36 hours of video playback, up from 33 on the 17 Pro, helped by a slightly larger cell. The Pro Max goes further still — battery life is the one specification where paying more buys you a genuinely different experience rather than a bigger version of the same one.

The honest way to choose

Buy the 18 Pro if you use your phone one-handed, put it in a front pocket, or have ever put a phone back down because it was tiring to hold in bed. 211g in a case is already near 240g. At 6.3 inches it is the smaller phone by a margin you notice every single day, and nothing about the photos or the speed is compromised by choosing it.

Buy the 18 Pro Max if you watch video, read, or work on the phone for long stretches, or if you finish most days hunting for a charger. The extra hours are the point. The larger screen is the second reason, not the first — people who buy a Max for the screen and then find it unwieldy end up back on the smaller phone next year, and that is an expensive way to learn your hand size.

An underrated third option: put the $100 into storage instead. A 512GB 18 Pro costs about the same as a 256GB Pro Max, and if you shoot ProRes video or keep years of photos on-device, running out of storage will annoy you far more often than running out of battery.

Coming from an older iPhone

Reviewers landed on the same summary almost word for word: the 18 Pro is an excellent phone and an iterative one. Coming from an iPhone 14 Pro or older, the jump in chip, camera and battery is substantial and the upgrade is easy to justify. Coming from a 16 or 17 Pro, most reviews said to hold — you have the same design, and the year-over-year gains are real but modest.
