Apple Watch Ultra 4 vs Series 12: Paying Double for Battery and Bulk

Apple announced both watches on 9 September 2026 and put them on sale on 18 September. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 starts at $799; the Series 12 starts at $399 for the 42mm aluminium model. That is a clean doubling of price, and the thing that makes this year's decision unusual is how little of it goes on the parts people normally compare.

They share more than they don't

Both watches run the same S11 chip — the first new Apple Watch silicon in two years, with 4GB of RAM, double the previous generation. Both get the redesigned health sensing system: a denser array of sensors reading heart rate every five seconds and heart rate variability every five minutes, which is roughly twenty-four times more often than last year. Both get the new Readiness score that folds training load, sleep and vitals into a single daily number. Both run watchOS 27, and both get the on-device audio intelligence features that are effectively exclusive to this generation's chip.

So the health tracking, the AI features and the speed are not differentiators this year. If a review told you the Series 12's sensors are a leap forward, the Ultra 4 has exactly the same ones.

Battery is the headline. The Ultra 4 is rated for 50 hours of normal use, up from 42 on the Ultra 3, and 84 hours in low power mode, with a new extended workout mode rated at 45 hours. A Series 12 is a daily-charge watch. An Ultra 4 is a twice-a-week-charge watch, and that single difference is what most owners say they actually notice.

The rest is ruggedness you either need or you don't: a dive-capable water rating, dual-frequency GPS for accuracy in cities and canyons, satellite emergency messaging, and a brighter display for direct sunlight.

The thing spec sheets don't tell you: weight

The Ultra 4's case alone is about 63g. A 46mm aluminium Series 12 is around 39g. That is a 24g difference before you add a band, and it is the single most common reason people return an Ultra. If you sleep in your watch for the sleep tracking — and the new Readiness score gives you a reason to — a 49mm titanium case on a smaller wrist is a genuinely different experience from a 42mm aluminium one.

There is no small Ultra. The Ultra 4 comes in 49mm titanium, natural or black, and nothing else. The Series 12 comes in 42mm or 46mm, in aluminium (Black, Dark Bronze, Light Gold and Space Gray), in titanium, and in a new ceramic finish.

Which one to buy

Series 12 for most people. You get this year's chip, this year's sensors and this year's software for half the money, in a case you will forget you are wearing. Choose 42mm unless you have larger wrists or want the bigger screen for messages; the 46mm cellular model makes sense if you run or swim without your phone and want calls and messages without it.

Ultra 4 if you camp, dive, run ultras, or spend days away from a charger — or if charging a watch every single night is the reason your last one ended up in a drawer. Fifty hours changes the relationship with the device.

A note on the titanium Series 12: it narrows the price gap considerably, and at that point the decision stops being about money and becomes purely about battery and wrist size. If you find yourself comparing a titanium Series 12 against an Ultra 4, ask how often you are genuinely more than a day from a charger.

What buyers actually say

Reviewers split along predictable lines — the Series 12 described as the right call for most people and the best mainstream smartwatch on sale, the Ultra 4 as the adventure watch for people who will use the ruggedness. Among existing owners, the recurring theme is that Ultra 2 and Ultra 3 owners see little reason to upgrade unless their battery health has degraded, since the case design is externally unchanged and the health sensors are the real story this year.
