Legion Go 2 vs Steam Deck vs ROG Xbox Ally X vs Steam Machine (2026)

Every handheld comparison leads with screens and chips. That is the wrong order, because for a large share of buyers the decision is settled before any of it matters — by whether the games you actually play will launch at all.

So we will start there, then do the hardware properly.

The anti-cheat problem, which decides this for most people

SteamOS is Linux. Games run through a compatibility layer called Proton, and it works remarkably well — until a game uses anti-cheat software. Then it depends entirely on whether the publisher chose to switch on Linux support.

Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye both technically support Linux. Many publishers simply never enabled it. And kernel-level anti-cheat — Riot's Vanguard, Activision's Ricochet, Bungie's system — has no Linux support at all and no workaround.

Across a tracked catalogue of anti-cheat titles, roughly 66% of EasyAntiCheat games and 55% of BattlEye games work on Linux. Kernel-level anti-cheat games: zero.

Note the two entries marked "worked until". Destiny 2 ran on Linux until Bungie moved to kernel-level anti-cheat in 2023. League of Legends ran until Vanguard rolled out in 2024. This can move against you after you have bought the hardware.

If your list includes Fortnite, Valorant, Call of Duty, Destiny 2, Apex, PUBG, Siege or GTA Online, you need Windows. That eliminates the Steam Deck and the Steam Machine regardless of how good they are.

Three things in that table deserve comment.

The Steam Deck is the old one now. Its Zen 2 CPU and RDNA 2 graphics date to the original 2022 launch — the OLED model changed the screen and battery, not the silicon. There is no Steam Deck 2. Valve has announced the Steam Machine, a VR headset and a controller, but not a successor handheld.

It also got more expensive. Valve raised prices in May 2026, from $549 and $649 to $789 and $949, citing component costs. The LCD model was discontinued in December 2025. The Deck's headline advantage — being the cheap one — is largely gone.

Weight is a real differentiator. The Legion Go 2 is ~938g against the Deck's ~640g. That is nearly 300g, and you feel it after an hour. The Legion Go 2's compensation is an 8.8" 144Hz OLED, which is the best screen in the category by some distance.

The Ally X's 80Wh battery is the biggest of the three handhelds and it shows. But every one of these lands around two to three hours in a demanding game. Treat "all-day handheld gaming" as marketing.

Real frame rates

From published reviews rather than manufacturer claims:

• Legion Go 2 — Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 66fps on battery, 75fps plugged in, 800p. Baldur's Gate 3 around 60fps at 1200p medium.
• ROG Xbox Ally X — Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 79fps unplugged, 720p medium; 52fps at 1080p. Fortnite 40–45fps plugged at 720p high.

Note how much both improve when plugged in. Handhelds run reduced power on battery, and the gap is roughly 10–15%.

The Steam Machine is not a handheld

Worth being clear, because it gets grouped in: the Steam Machine is a small mains-powered box that plugs into a TV. No screen, no battery. It runs the same SteamOS as the Deck with a much larger GPU — 28 compute units and dedicated 8GB of GDDR6, against the Deck's 8 shared units.

It launched at the end of June 2026 and is still gated behind a reservation queue rather than being a normal buy-it-now product. And it inherits the anti-cheat table above in full — a Steam Machine will not run Valorant or Call of Duty either.

SteamOS on non-Valve hardware

The Legion Go S was the first officially licensed third-party SteamOS handheld — Valve's own announcement called it exactly that. Lenovo has since announced a SteamOS version of the Legion Go 2, around $1,199, with hardware identical to the Windows model.

This makes the choice cleaner than it used to be: you can now pick the hardware and the operating system separately. What you cannot do is escape the anti-cheat limits by choosing SteamOS on nicer hardware. The restriction is the OS, not the device.

For market context: independent tracking puts the whole Windows-and-SteamOS handheld category at roughly six million units over three years, with the Steam Deck holding about half. This is a small, young market — which is why the software situation is still this messy.
