Should You Wait for Black Friday to Buy an iPhone? (2026)

Every year the same question turns up in September, the moment the new iPhones land: is it worth holding out until Black Friday? The honest answer is that it depends almost entirely on which iPhone you want — and for the model most people are actually asking about, waiting is close to pointless.

Here is what the discounting actually looks like, rather than what the deal roundups imply.

Apple does not discount iPhones. It gives you a gift card.

This is the single most misunderstood thing about Apple and Black Friday. Apple runs a shopping event, not a sale. The price on the product page does not change. What changes is that selected purchases come with an Apple Gift Card attached.

In 2025 the event ran from Friday 28 November to Monday 1 December, with gift cards worth up to $250 depending on the product, and $75 on an iPhone 16. That is the shape of it every year: the more expensive the category, the larger the card.

The distinction matters more than it sounds. A $75 gift card is worth $75 only if you were already going to spend $75 at Apple. If you buy the phone and never use the card, the effective discount is zero. If you use it on something you would not otherwise have bought, the discount is closer to zero still — you have spent more, not less.

What genuinely moves: the previous generation, at third-party retailers

The real reductions come from Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart and Target, which set their own prices and compete with each other. Across recent years, upfront cuts on current-ish iPhones have run in the region of $50 to $300, depending on model and storage.

The pattern is structural rather than accidental. A phone released in September is eight or nine weeks old on Black Friday, demand is at its annual peak, and nobody needs to discount it. The model it replaced is the one sitting in warehouses.

Beware the headline number

The largest figures you will see in November — the "up to $1,100 off" style claims — are almost never money off the price. They are one of two things:

• Trade-in credit. You are being shown the maximum possible value of an old handset in perfect condition, on the newest eligible model. It is real money, but it is money for your old phone, not a discount on the new one, and the top figure applies to almost nobody.
• Carrier contract value. A "free" iPhone on a carrier is bill credits spread over 24 or 36 months, conditional on staying on a qualifying plan for the whole term. Leave early and the remaining credits stop. The handset is also usually locked to that carrier until the instalments are paid.

Neither is a reason to delay a purchase if you intend to buy the phone outright and keep it unlocked.

The case against waiting that nobody makes

Three situations where holding out until 27 November is a mistake:

1. Your current phone is failing. Twelve weeks of a dying battery or a cracked screen is a poor trade for a saving that may not materialise on the model you want.
2. You want the current flagship. See above — it is the least likely thing in the store to be reduced.
3. Stock risk on specific configurations. Popular colour and storage combinations sell out during the event, and the alternative offered is frequently a configuration that costs more than the one you wanted at full price in October.

There is also a quieter point about 2026 specifically. Memory and SSD component prices have been under real pressure from AI-server demand, and Apple raised prices across parts of the desktop line in June. When underlying costs are rising, discounting tends to get shallower, not deeper.

The bigger price movement happens in September, not November

If the goal is simply to pay less for a good iPhone, the largest single price change in the calendar is not Black Friday at all. It is Apple's own repositioning when new models launch: the previous generation either drops to a new official price or is discontinued and clears through retailers. That happens in September. By late November the best of that repricing has already been absorbed.
